Kite Engines
What is a kite engine?  Is a transducer an engine?  Kite engines seem to take some of the wind's kinetic energy in order to generate motion, lift, drag, heat, electricity, sound, vibrations, oscillations, etc. Is a kite engine a generator?  Is a kite an engine?  Is a kite a motor?  A kite system may have an integrated proper subassembly (less than the whole system) that is identified as a kite motor or kite engine.  We do not resolve the issue of what terms to use among generator, motor, engine, sensor, transducer, but are concerned with having kite systems do things; the kite operates and something happens as a result. Getting the results wanted will mean designing, building, and controlling a certain kite system that deposits desired results.

Particular communities use terms within their field without always matching the usage in other tech fields.   We urge AWES developers to tell us about inputs and outputs and how the transformation of inputs to outputs occurs.  We invite all AWES teams to discuss their kite engines in AirborneWindEnergy public forum.

           Essays are invited
We invite all to send notes/links about their own kite engines.

The term "kite engine" used in a special sense:

circa 1905, ""kite engine" in a different sense: If I understand this correctly, the steam was used to drive an engine that operated winding the kite line; my interpretation has yet to be solidly verified.   Article was written by George C.
