Abstract: The available wind power resource worldwide at altitudes between 500 and
12,000 m above ground is assessed for the first time. Twenty-eight years of wind data from
the reanalyses by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the Department of
Energy are analyzed and interpolated to study geographical distributions and persistency of
winds at all altitudes. Furthermore, intermittency issues and global climate effects of large scale
extraction of energy from high-altitude winds are investigated.

16June2009 No-tether-to-ground jet-stream-involved dual-aircraft EKS AWE  Power beam energy from above. Use differential momentums of two aloft locations aloft-coupled smartly; one location stays in the jet stream; the coupled location is out of the jet stream. Massively-smart controls tap the system for some energy converted to power beams which energy is sent to receivers on the ground or sea or to active aircraft.    [  Competitor: PV  : -)   ?]

14June2009  Big change of focus to low altitude experimenting announced.  June 13, 2009, at FORUMopen 2009.  This followed a notice by KiteLab two years ago circulated:

For two years KiteLab has insisted that Makani Power, Inc. badly miscalculated its altitude targets.    KiteLab's pointed critique, "The Stratosphere is a Harsh Mistress," was circulated to company operatives---and  its message slowly sunk in.  Makani Power, Inc.  is now aiming 90% lower. 5June2009 Kite Pulley Lever

Then, with the teeter-totter balance, a dual-ratcheting flywheel pumps water or compresses air, with a scaled-down "Hydristor."

With that, the low-speed oscillations of the lever can pump one good whoosh each time, with this hydraulic invention.  http://www.hydristor.com/

Granted, it presently uses regular, ole hydraulic fluid.  Though, I've done some web searching, and discovered that sunflower oil-based hydraulic fluids are now just as good to use.

So, about this drawing, see the adjustable weight, which could either be a battery bank, or an electrolysis unit.  It can slide back and forth, and balance out the figure-8 oscillation path of the parafoil H2-filled kite.

By making both the electricity and the pumping water (or air) into a tank, two things can happen at once, while also staying independent of each other.                         ~Darin Selby

Workshops

Here you'll find information about workshops that have been held by DOE's Wind and Hydropower program that relate to the topic of wind power. These workshops are designed to support the vision described in the 20% Wind Energy by 2030 Report.

  • 20% Wind Energy by 2030 Workshop
Held from October 6-7 in Arlington, Virginia, this event focused on identifying potential ways to have 20% of the United States' electricity supplied by wind power by 2030.
  • U.S. Wind Manufacturing Workshop
Held from August 27-28, in Washington, D.C., this event focused on the manufacturing base needed to achieve 20% wind energy by 2030
