Abstract:

An airborne electricity producing generator powered by wind at high altitude. A gas filled balloon keeps the turbines and other apparatus afloat. Connection with the ground is with tethers that also prevent the apparatus from floating freely and conduct electricity, thereby bringing the electricity produced to ground based transformers. Computer controls the position, direction, tilt and height of the apparatus depending on wind direction and speed.

1Sep2009 http://xercesblue.org/index_en.html
1Sep2009 Aerostat self-inflates with hydrogen made via use of solar energy (it envelope converts solar energy to electricity; that electricity operates over ambient atmospheric moisture to produce hydrogen; that hydrogen is used to fill the aerostat; the aerostat forms to an efficient kytoon. The aerostatic kytoon rises and its tether becomes taut. The electricity aloft is used to input control changes that cause the kytoon to do power figure-eight paths and continue to convert air's moisture to hydrogen; the power paths drive a counter-weighted tipping boom; the driven tipping boom drives a spragged shaft; the rotated shaft drives an electric generator or pump (lift water, or do immediate work, or compress air). The materials of the kytoon are UV resistant. The system is a robot-controlled stable single-line LTA kite system that remains aloft night and day for a year or more. Notice that the gas loss is replenished continually as needed without feed from the ground. The generator is on the ground. Units may be anchored, triggered, and then abandoned. Sensors and communication devices send status data to a central wind-farm mainframe. Millions of these units around the world... small and large may be a game changer.       JoeF, August 31, 2009, public domain.

So far, entered ideas:
  • AWE surfaces as converters of solar energy for purpose of nearly autonomous self-erection of kytoon lifter kite system where the electricity converts ambient atmospheric moisture to hydrogen to fill the kytoon both for launching and then maintaining gas pressure.

  • Aloft SSLK uses solar energy to charge small aloft battery used for smart controlling kite pathing of the AWE system (ground-stationed generator).

  • Backup field electricity source for AWE arrangement.

  • Hybrid AWE where generation of electricity comes from both the mechanical kite sector as well as the kite's surface solar-energy conversion sector.

  • Living quarters in the sky for AWE ranger is with solar-energy electricity supply.

5Sep2009 Lifter kites hold wind-driven tail turbines of very many designs. Bottles, old CD disks, etc. form spiraling tails that drive generators.  Explore YouTube for wind turbine and then design lifter kites featuring the tailed removed turbine concepts.  If the lifter kite is a LTA kytoon of stable-single-line type, then small or large wind can be mined for energy at low and higher altitude. At very high altitude, consider non-conductive tether while using laser or microwave conversions for sending energy to ground reception spots for further conversion to electricity (and then perhaps to hydrogen).   Discuss this family of AWE  in AirborneWindEnergy group.

A "square sailed" single-skin "play wing", possibly the most ancient of kites, with four or more lines, is a good AWE/traction alternative to proprietary three line single skin kites, for high scaling potential with added benefits, including increased performance. The leading edge can be made luff resistant by sawtooth turbulation.

    • LoopTether or single loop tether through one ground generator or "FanBelt"  where aloft actions cause the tethering belt to drive the generator

    • Single-loop through two ground pulleys. Gear at lofted spinning kite-lofted wing drives the loop; the driven loop rotates ground-station generator or pump.

    • The main tether could be a double-line (two parts of tensed loop).

    • A main tether plus a loop brings three lines occurring

    • "run a continuous loop of line from a capstan on the turbine to one on the ground gen"  DaveS concerning alternative to torsion tube driving ground-based generator as he was weighing how torsion tube method limits system to low altitude winds.

    • Contrast stay-aloft-spinning driver systems from the method where kites go up and go down in a loop; both have a driven loop, but the wings-stay-aloft method is quite distinct from the wings rotate up and down via changes of angle of attach of the wings.

      • Contrast two generic fanbelt AWE systems:
        1. Wings stay aloft driving a long loop line.
                  A. Loop is the tensed tether of the AWE system.
                  B. Loop is distinct from the main AWE system tether.

        2. Wings on a loop rotate from a high altitude point to a lower altitude point via airfoil pitch changes; that loop drives generator or pump directly or alternatively drives a gear aloft to a second loop that incorporates the situation in "1." above. .

Though the following pinwheel generator is stiff towered, alter it a bit and put 10 inches of tether at the pinwheel axis, keep the hand boom and swing that baby about (pendulum countering to stay a blocking to work the generator might be needed for the in-pinwheel generator. Alternatives with generator left in hand boom can be figured. Actually Darin Selby's opposing twisters may make a great beginning AWE in the small. Selsam and SpiralAirfoil may have the makings for a root market revolution AWE device in this genre.]  Put tethered version in the hands of a billion children to train a generation in AWE to help make market for the coming AWE supply revolution.   Click through image for the patent.

Tether scientists are invited to describe the dynamics of the 10 inch tether and the amount of energy that might be generated by a healthy normal sized 6 year old child with a specified sized pinwheel generator AWE device.

Market specialists are invited to figure out the social/market impact of a billion children playing with such an AWE device coupled with Internet explanations of the mechanics and the potential implications of AWE.  Kite energy. 19Sept2009 Prediction: There will be competition events that pit towered wind turbines against AWECS. Cost formula will be constructed. Maintenance, replacement, dismantling, recycling, labor, transportation, transmission, mishaps cost,  land costs, interest, etc.
19Sept2009

Advanced enlightened mother approaches an AWEsome advancer:
"What toyAWE kit do you recommend for my 10 year daughter?
I want to introduce her to both an electricity-generating system as well as a tug system. Oh yes, and also one that tugs a toy barge that holds a little hydro-turbine that energizes lamps on the toy boat!
Can I find these at what store?
Are they available online?
You see, my daughter has expressed interest in becoming an AWE engineer
to help the world meet energy needs
in a clean and sustainable manner."

20Sept2009 Have the backside or upper side of AWE lifters and actors be reflective of the sun to send back to space some of the sun's radiation, along the lines Ken Caldeira, a fellow at the Carnegie Institution at Stanford, and geo-engineering team are considering.
20Sept2009 Three large branches of wind power:
  1. Ground-based low altitude wind power  (E.g.: hard-towered-held turbines, energy-capturing fences, energy-producing trees, sailed carousels, some torsion devices, etc.)

  2. AWE tethered to groundstation with its own two major sectors:
    • Aloft generator              [ED: agAWE]
    • GroundStationed generator, pump, or work agent.       [ED: gsgAWE]

  3. Totally-aloft AWE having no tower or no tether to the ground
(E.g.: UtilityAWECS with Totally Aloft Smart Dynamic Soaring Dual-Kite Solution that keeps actor-lifter in jet stream and an actor-drogue exterior of the jet stream that converts energy to perhaps laser which laser is sent to one or more receivers, etc.)
20Sept2009 Will wind-energy captured by AWE have a hurtful effect?
Wind balances heat and cold on earth. Will just more wind be formed when AWE slows some wind, as the balancing will still need to take place?  Study and discuss in group?
20Sept2009 http://www.speakerfactory.net/wind_old.htm

Selsam says that he invented the AWE method of Laddermill:
"Just a brief note:
I invented the "Laddermill" in 1979, had it notarized etc.
Please see:
http://www.speakerfactory.net/wind_old.htm
go about 3/4 of the way down.
It is all documented.

At this tender young age, between telling everyone how big wind energy would soon be, to the doubt of "smart people" like, for example, my Yale-educated engineer father, I also saw that the laddermill was a drag machine, that drag-based turbine were the less efficient, therefore the "laddermill" (which I called "Auto-Oriented Wind Harnessing Ariel Tramway") needed to be changed to a lift-based machine - the sky serpent! - (then as now having difficulty deciding how to spell "Ariel" :)
Anyway, I have to say, with all due respect to others in this field, especially a pioneer such as Shepard, I think I have been way ahead of the curve since I was a kid; and if I could get people to help, I think I actually HAVE viable technology now. It does not *necessarily* require buoyancy as the turbines can fly themselves as you know.

Although I have also patented the concept of blades that are filled with helium or hydrogen, so the lifting body also provides the power. It makes me want to cry to see people putting resources behind lame-duck concepts such as Magenn - I could always make a more powerful turbine with the spare change in my pocket than they could ever produce even if they had millions to work with. It is all very sad to be basically (somewhat?) ignored while all the talking heads endlessly discuss how they will leave no stone unturned, put huge resources behind the effort etc., and you know going in they will waste ALL the money and do nothing that was not going to be done before, by the entrenched big players in wind energy.
Oh well, as I like to say, the welcome mat is out.

Here is my logic:
1   You have to tether it somehow so use a driveshaft.
2   Keep the heavy stuff on the ground and let the light stuff fly.
Maboomba!

September 20, 2009, Doug Selsam has given EnergyKiteSystems permission to republish images of his 1970's documentation that seems to be a strong claim for original inventing for a type of AWECS (airborne wind energy conversion system) that is now often called LadderMill because of the work done later by KiteLab at Delft University, Netherlands under guide by astronaut professor Wubbo J. Ockels.  Study and discussion on these matters has started in group AirborneWindEnergy at message: M309.
Click through to see his notarized documentation and drawings:

[ED: From Doug's text on his site about his concepts and his drawings of his original disclosure, it seems that he then did not see a couple of directions: 1. Lower-altitude second loop of lines that do not have acting wings, but which lower loop still transfers the upper wheeled tensional drive to drive the groundstation generator.    2. The possibility of having down-going wings be fully negative lifters driving very strongly and even with an effective use of the lee flows of the up-going wings.  Separations and formats of lifter holds form a family of maturing laddermills. The lower wingless loops may allow a a simpler aloft laddermill with acting wings kept only in high altitude winds.  With such priority, perhaps a renaming to BAT (buoyant aerial tramway) might be in order to replace "laddermill" that was coined by the Delft group. Studies and commentaries are invited. ]

21Sept2009 The smartly controlled coupled-dual kite system that has no tether to the ground where one terminus actor-lifter kite stays in the jet stream and the other coupled terminus actor-drogue kite stays outside the jet stream forms a system that works non-stop 100% of days and nights. The aloft generated electricity is converted to either microwave but preferably laser (better mobile pointing to ground receptors).  A constellation of the system type could circle each hemisphere.  No tether to ground, no hard towers, no bird kills, clean, sustainable.  The "smart" assembly keeps the system's terminus-acting turbines in their respective different winds. The difference of airs and dynamics is not too unlike the bi-space actions occurring in sport powerkiting with the board (water-kite or hydrofoil) in the water and the upper controlled kite in the wind.

The two jet streams need only be lightly mined to supply enough power for all humans. For winds and power available at various altitudes, the helpful recent publication of an earth wind atlas is helpful for analysis: http://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/2/2/307/   by Cristina Archer and Ken Caldeira              JoeF

What might be the coming utilization of multiple wings on a torsion shaft in AWE?
Consider air-hung devices where over-valley cables are anchored in mountains. Consider tailing downwind multiplicities from grand severe lifter kites and kytoons.

Instead of installing a swivel on those spinning kite tails: Put an inline electric generator where the swivel would have been placed for spinning kite tails.
Quick sketch: torsionmultipleblade.jpg      Consider severe wide lifter kytoon hanging scores of torsion tails with each tail holding multiple high-aspect ratio spinning blade, paired spinning chutes, inflated blades, Earth SpiralAirfoils, etc. as best fits application, site, and particular economics.. Let each tail unit drive a generator or collect the torsion otherwise for a single generator; return the gains out of the jet stream via laser to ground receptors.

[ED: His art indicates AWECS kite farm utilizing method that shows in Fig. 1 B of 1975 filed patent 3987987 by Peter R. Payne, Charles McCutchen, that is, a boom rocked  via use of two tethers; the left tether becomes taut while the right tether slacks and then exchanging roles.  Controls would guide the kite coterie for its wind window pathing left to right to left, etc.  The oscillation would rock the boom; the boom's center would rotate and drive generator.    The video caption states that the video is a simplification. And  "OrthoKiteBunch is a new type of kite generator."   Multiplicity of kites in coterie and trains is not new art. We hold our tongue on the newness of claims. The art is very enjoyable.  Discussion in group is invited.]

OrthoKiteBunch video caption English is:

"OrthoKiteBunch is a new type of kite generator, for a gigawatt installation with a 2,5 km² area swept and less than 1 km² ground occupation. OrthokiteBunch links two new concepts.OrthoKite concept:constant and optimal orthogonal force on one one lever arm then the opposite lever arm. KiteBunch concept: kite lines converge, so the kites can be superimposed to capture a full area without space loss (it is not really possible with an usual train kite). Two relay lines with their respective winches link a bunch of kites to a double lever arm. A winch winds the working line while the other winch unwinds the free line.
Actuating cylinders towards hydraulic accumulators and motors smooth the production of the electrical generators.
The animation is simplified."

The kites can capture altitude winds more regular and puissants. Différents systems were designed.

The OrthoKiteBunch developing a gigawatt by capturing an area of 2.5 sq. km of a wind of 12 m / s, for an occupation on the ground under one sq km. It is the result of the realization link two concepts : right angle pulling alternately on one lever and contrast for optimum transmission and almost constant tensile force, and arrangement of elements in clusters of flying kites overlay whose lines converge at a point where down the two rows over.

Bouquets of kites allow full coverage of the surface and worked especially on the vertical (unlike the conventional train of kites which must be remote from each other for uptake unmasked wind, and therefore unduly occupy the space, and also fly at different speeds in proportion to the length of rope).
The levers serve to multiply the force, not to define a space flight, which is assigned to the lines themselves: and the structural elements are small.
The levers are twofold, thereby positioning orthogonal lines where a maximum tangential force.
Two lines relays transmit the traction and rotation are controlled by their repect winches: one winch winds the line while towing winch another place another line up and pull out.
The parasitic radial forces are nonexistent, and axial depending on the angle of flight and can be eliminated by tilting the tray to swivel also guide the assembly according to wind direction.
The flight pattern of kites is very simple: high speed flight in a movement transverse wiper.
The output is smoothed by the implementation of hydraulic accumulators to fill the hollow ring when the half-turns, by activating hydraulic motors driving generators. In the event of a sudden loss of wind, the rotors could be powered to maintain control for landing if autorotation were insufficient. Powered rotors might also be used for launching into marginal wind, to get up to good wind.
