  72. Joe and Neil put on table: "Enlightened NBCity with Eureka-moment citizen" going strongly to complete project.  Frank puts on table the challenge of Arts Commission oversight and remnant downer image of "hang gliding" as part of reason City is likely not to spearhead Project Otto Marker.   Frank seeks more immediate success in original plan: Gift ready stone to City for City placement; yet Frank still sees a possible oversight challenge from the Arts Commission that has charter to oversee the artists involved.

  73. Frank will write Bill Liscomb for possible film festival presence in NBCity.  Neil presented opportunity: http://www.newportbeachfilmfest.com/2011/2011/02/04/contact-us/      Support for showing Big Blue Sky might arrive in concert with Newport Beach Historical Society.

  76. BobK (paraphrased):
    1. Find "Someone to accept" the plaque/stone: citizen, council person, or citizen.
    2. Now flyer soliciting "someone"  and invite to a "Thank You" celebration, small scale, perhaps      Two to distribute flyer  from HG; Bob is available for a couple of days; who else?
    3. Wording of plaque sub-project: now.
[JpF: Wording discussion is in flow; Linda and Mike of WW copied.)]
    4. Wording of flyer.
    5. Park placement.                              April 6, 2011.

  77. Frank: Bill Liscomb gave OK for getting Big Blue Sky in next year's NBCity local film festival. Frank will inquire further on the matter.

  78. Joe: Idea:  Perhaps local newspaper for notice to citizens? Letter to editor?  Story?

  79. BobK suggests: Make marker soon.  He called for pricing to one company.
[Paraphrased by JpF: "Here, a marker for your City!"  Hot potato.]
  80. Neil:                   (paraphrased)                         April 6, 2011
    *  Patience while we inform the citizens of NB City.  Slower may be better.
    *  [ ] Get facts of ownership of the hill's parkway; is it under domain of a homeowner's association or not?
    *  [ ] Is there a homeowner's association involved? If so, do they have meetings? Find out facts on this. If so, possible presentation of BBS.
    *  Threshold target: residents get enough informed that they WANT to set stone.
    *  Build upon what HG presence there is already at the John Wayne Airport where HGs hang. Colver Wing?  Lambie corner featuring Neil's collection on Jack Lambie.
There might be a HG museum in the NB City's coming future.

  81. JoeF:  I envision a colored flyer that tells the facts with some images and declarations. I envision myself, at least, getting some good walking exercise distributing the flyer to most all homes of NB City in order to seed the pride of NB City. The flyer would focus on the fact of NB City's historic inheritance. Some ad space might be sold on the flyer to pay for the colored printing; I am thinking Wills Wing, Wind Sports, US Hawks, USHPA, as possible ad spot holders on this matter with very modest presence, so as not to block the high position of Newport Beach City mention.   The flyer would have web addresses that feature our story for the City. From all of this action will arrive to hang gliding some new students and association memberships. Where can I get lessons or have a discovery flight?  Answer: WindSports Soaring Center, not far.  Where can I see activity? Torrey Pines Gliderport.   The flyer might be written in the "we of Newport Beach City have a inherited grace: we have significantly contributed to humans around the world fulfilling the enduring dream to fly like a bird.  Many are thanking Newport Beach for having hosted the key meet that ushered in the persistent successful renaissance of the sport of hang gliding."

  82. Joe Greblo:    (paraphrased)::   suggests a first key communication step is to visit directly and meet City Council Representative; get the matter clear with him or her. Then ask for best contact persons as next step; and perhaps the council person would carry the banner.

  83. JoeF:   Plaque statements ought to be historically accurate. Otto Lilienthal and others after already had sport hang gliding going. Some see Otto as modern over tower jumpers of earlier ages. The Germans in 1920s had sport hang gliding division in sport gliding meets.  We pointedly in spectacular fashion ushered in a renaissance of sport hang gliding on the hill in Newport Beach City.

  84. Bill Liscomb said that Big Blue Sky could be shown to groups that are not paying  to be at the gathering that see the film.

  85. Frank noticed: Newport Beach Film Festival starts on the 28th and runs to May 5th. Maybe there is still an opening. Entry fee $55?
    JoeF: found on entry form:
"This event has already made decisions and notified submitters for the current cycle. Submissions are no longer being accepted."

  86. Unofficial polling or suggest differently over plaque wording: HERE

  87. Full hour video featuring Bill Liscomb and his story and perspectives related to May 23, 1971, Otto Meet.     Blue Sky Big Blue Sky: The History of Hang Gliding   [$1, not $5 for lithographic machine, not mimeograph; also, missed was the 1908 fact in Breslau of cable-braced triangle control frame for HG; missed Paresev eight pilots on tubular-framed; missed Mike Burns; thus the JD credit was off on the mechanics.]
  88. Neil contacted HG club in northern California for petition interest.
  89. Neil offers edits and still open discussion: http://www.energykitesystems.net/Lift/2011/2011AprilLIFT.html#OfferNL        April 10, 2011.
  90. JoeF:  To unify discussion on possible wording on stone: Discuss at USHawks   April 10, 2011

  92. JoeF put up another wording offer built upon the strong Neil Larson basis.
  93. Neil finds oral-history workshop that aims to capture Newport Beach City oral history.
  94. Neil tells of some technical California landmark parameters.  Paraphrase: Caution over the plaque wording.
  95. JoeF puts forward that his "sparking", "persistent", "renaissance" may have challenges relative to the parameters Neil put on the table.
  96. Bob Bendetson was invited to the "wording" committee. Along the way we get the Dockweiler flight report: Bendetson Dockweiler Flight Meter:
    11,719 and counting.
~~ Bob Bendetson      April 13, 2011 Bob has accomplished 11,719 launches and same count of landings; one day he might just takeoff and never land.
  97. Opportunity dates with council and historical society are being considered for possible visits by BobK, FrankC, or others.  Looking for public comment op or mix-n-tell ops.    April 14, 2011.

  100. Frank C. shared response from one party.   Public comment time at city council meeting was mentioned as an opportunity .
  101. BobK points committee to timing; Neil and Frank stepping forward on pace; a final wording will be presented for any final commentary. Plaque ordering will be soon.        April 19, 2011.
  102. World via OzR was again invited to the project
  103. "worldwide" as compound term?
  104. Tick Tock crunch e-mail series by committee. Wordsmithing for plaque. Option site obtained:  http://www.FirstModernHangGlidingMeet.org/     May 3rd to 5th, 2011.
  105. Celebration at noon on birthday, Monday, 2011 is on.... at St. Miguel Park.   (No HG flight gear showing to respect the residential neighborhood.). Wording for first stone is set; stone and etch gift by Bob Kuczewski.   Later some second stone, when in agreement with all parties for permanent installation will be paid by a collection of pledges.  Daily Pilot will cover the mild gathering.       Good job,  Marker Project Team !!!  [[It is to be appreciated that art of San Miguel is ever showing integrated wings.]
  106. Wording for the stone was finally set by broad consensus in committee work.
  107. Margie Holland and Bob Kuczewski gifted the stone and etching to the project.
  108. XC and OZ Report have noticed the gathering on Monday, May 23, 2011, noon.
  109. Frank Colver reminded Daily Pilot to show at the day.
  110. May 23, 2011: Party!  Custodian accepted stone from contemporary leaders. Photos and story are being featured by US Hawks:  .HERE
Thanks again to project founder Neil Larson!!!
  111.  Frank Colver makes double progress on the worldwide hang gliding Otto Meet marker project: 1. Good contact with council person of the district encircling the site. Frank is invited to speak during public comment at council meeting soon; he could do a short show and tell.  2. He purchased the last stone bench in the cemetery that holds the flying site; he is ordering engraving to tell of the 1971 turning-point meet.   Super, Frank!    He predicts now that there will eventually be two stones set, one a bench in the cemetery and one at San Miguel Park, if all goes well.
Hi All, so much to report!

I know we decided to open this up publicly by communicating via the Hawks web forum, but I felt that I would put this news out to the "committee" first.

We will have a history statement on the actual hillside that the flying took place. Today I purchased plots in Pacific View memorial park that include a granite bench which will have the HG history statement engraved in it and even a graphic or two of a hang glider (checking to see what might be available from stock designs). The bench is right next to a road, about half way up the hill, and looks like approximately where Richard Miller flew over. It is right in the area where we stopped when we went there from San Miguel Park, Monday the 23rd. We were very fortunate to get this because it is the only bench available on the entire hillside, all others are taken and they will not add any more. A man had it on hold for a long time and decided he could not afford it, so he released it.

Here is the inscription I have ordered. Any other suggestions need to get to me quickly, but I will be the "decider". Words can also be placed on the sides and I wondered about adding the list of attendees? The hang glider graphic will go on the vertical supporting pedestal, possibly front and back.

ON THIS HILL, MAY 23, 1971, WITH A GATHERING OF ENTHUSIASTS FOR PERSONAL HUMAN FLIGHT, BEGAN THE WORLDWIDE SPORT OF HANG GLIDING.

MAY THE LIFT BE GOOD AND MAY THEIR SPIRITS SOAR ABOVE.
