Parachutes
(are subset of free-flight kites which are subset of kites; wing set, tether set, and resistive set)

  • Types by L/D     : L/D =0.   Part of the reality of this type is that during the descent, there will be portions of the flight that kite positively some, but the dominant flight is without positive deflection.
    • Gliding parachutes:    0<L/D <1        1L/D<2          2L/D<3     3L/D<4      4L/D<5     5L/D<6     6L/D<7     7L/D<10    10≤L/D<25     15L/D<20
  • Types by stiffening involved:
    • Canopy only:   Conical canopy and multiples of same, Rogallo wing, Multiple sections of Rogallo Wing and evolutes, Barish Glide Wing and evolutes, Jalbert Parafoil and evolutes, mixed complexes,
    • Positively inflated parts
    • Rigid rods in canopy
    • Rigid surfaces and no canopy
  • Types by mission:
    • Launching from B.A.S.E.
    • Launching from snow-skis
    • Dropping from paragliders
    • Dropping from hang gliders
    • Dropping from powered aircraft
    • Dropping from conventional kite systems
