  1. Automated control of kites for electricity generation
      

     The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates the need for installing more than 47 GW new wind capacity at an estimated cost of 500 billion NOK each year until 2050 if we are to meet the renewable targets set to tackle global warming. 
     
     Innovasjon Norge is supporting KraftKite to investigate the possibilities of using kites to produce electricity in a radical new approach. Kites will enable a solution that replaces some of the more expensive components of todays wind mills, and thus drastically reduce costs. Kites behave just been introduced for propultion of ships, but are novel instruments in electricity production. One of the key challenges will be automated control of kites given the relatively large variations in the wind conditions. For a system to be commercially successful the flight of the kites must have very high reliability. The task at hand will be modeling of the kites, consideration of needed sensor technology and design of a control strategy to maximize the power output. The project is well suited to be continued in a master thesis.
