Ground Stations for Kite Systems
  • What may occur at a ground station (GS) of a kite system?
  • Parts of a ground station that are separated mechanically from the tether-set tensions?
  • Parts of a ground station that are in line with the tension of the kite system's tether set.  Consider multi-tethers in a kite system: the ground station gets enlarged as there may be a spread of tehters over a kite field; some lines may be for control, some lines may specialize in PTO operations.
  • When a GS serves groundgen kite systems, then the GS will have electric generators in the tether-tension path.
  • Network-kite-system GSs will have specialized GSs.
  • Future: "Kite-Ground-Station Engineer" and "Kite-System Ground Station Technician" and "Kite-Ground-Station Pilot-In-Comman," ... and the like.

  • Potential advanced GSs:  Sensors, tension meters, communications, generators, earth anchoring devices, masses for anchoring, fences, signs, emergency first-aids, workers, pilots, management tools, replacement parts, material handling devices, control board, software, computers, controllers, PTO devices, receivers for wind data, power meters, gear boxes, frames, alarms, lighting, safeguards, electrical grounding, lightning handlers, water controls,  housing, food services, backup coms, guest quarters, meeting room, custodial spaces and tools, energy storage, connectors to grids, fire-fighting devices, switches, repair shop, system summary status screen, emergency directory, logbooks, ladders, bulletin board with employment regulations posted, posted emergency guides, vehicles, building for grounded wings and lines,  radio-frequency devices, evidence to show that certain standards have been met, e.g.:
  • IEEE 1547 - grid interconnection
    • NEC – installation / wiring
    • UL Standards – equipment
    • IEC61400-2 - design, performance, and structural issues
    • UL6141 and UL6142 – electrical & mechanical safety
    • State standards for special cases    ...   ????

  • Classic toy kite flying's GS: Human holding SLK. The GS: human, hand, line winder, feet  on ground with its friction component, eyes, mind, skin, clothing, gloves, ...
  • Kite Turbine Ground Station introduction
  • Each AWES experiment  using kite systems have had GS, unless FFAWE where the opposing wing sets are mutually "ground systems" relative to the other wing set.Offshore AWES GSs deal with the water and seabed.
  • Presentation of 100 kW Kitepower ground station
  • Mobile winch capability with enhanced operations.  kPower
