Airborne wind solutions

Airborne wind solutions could be game changers by reducing the LCOE on bottom-fixed or floating wind farm sites. Airborne wind solutions are where the primary interaction with the wind happens at a point that is not rigidly connected to the foundation. Such systems can be classified by: OFFSHORE WIND 89 ● Altitude: boundary layer (0–3 000 m) or troposphere (3 000 – 19 000 m). ● Type of airfoil: lighter or heavier than air; rigid or flexible; drag-, lift- or rotorcraft-based. ● Generator location and type: ground or airborne; geared or direct drive. Devices typically either are static, using the speed of the wind flowing past them, or active, increasing the flow speed by moving themselves. Devices with generators on the ground typically use a system where the tether line connecting to the device is gradually let out, turning a drum connected to a generator. When the tether is at full extension, the device is put into low drag mode and pulled back to the ground station using the same arrangement, this time consuming energy. Challenges for the airborne wind energy solutions relate to cable loading (for airborne generators); the impact of lightning, due to the higher risk of strikes; aircraft and radar interference, due to moving higher in the atmosphere; safety in the event of fault or failure; and the impact of storms. Benefits include the increased scale and consistency of wind resources higher up and the decreased overall materials mass and cost. Examples of airborne wind solutions are provided in Figure 38 and Figure 39: Commercialisation is unlikely to take place before 2025, following further part-scale and full-scale demonstrator devices (onshore and offshore) and a pilot project. From the point of commercialisation, there are likely to be reasonable further reductions in the technology cost due to the lack of past experience with the aerodynamic and control elements of the technology and the wide range of optimisation opportunities available. Airborne wind has a potential benefit in terms of LCOE (goal A). Independent studies and supplier claims have suggested that savings of 50% are possible, but the scale of demonstration devices is such that there remains significant uncertainty in such figures. Due to lower overturning moments and lower foundation-mounted mass, airborne solutions are well suited to floating foundations, thereby offering the potential to open up new markets (goal C). With lower material use, lower structural loading (hence less impact during installation) and reduced avian impact, airborne wind also offers decreased environmental impact (goal D). Analysis- IRENA takes a fairly typical view of AWE, with a familiar mix of solid facts, a few questionable details, but no major distinguishing content.

AWE at sea is taken as a sort of a-priori IRENA bias, while it may prove generally more demanding than hoped by proponents (sea as "harsh mistress").

Subject: AWE Exhibitors invited to IDTechEx's Nov 2017 Silicon Valley Event
Via email, Dr. Harrop generously offers all AWE developers free exhibition space at this event. Could be a great AWE event, if enough serious folks participate. A field-demo component to this event would be ideal, if there is a kite field nearby. Lets look forward to seeing IDTechEx's event maybe mark a major milestone in AWE R&D, or at maybe a nice stepping stone to a climactic 2018 SeaTac AWE conference aimed at BEV. In any case, the AWEC-involved US conference drought is finally breaking by IDTechEx's worthy vision and initiative

Contact the organizers directly to make arrangements, which hopefully include panels, talks, and exhibitor-guest passes, to maximize VIP attendance.

We are a team of eight mechanical engineering bachelor students that will develop an airborne wind energy system within a year – from the idea to the optimized prototype.
With our project we are presenting an opportunity to make innovative use of renewable energies.
During the implementation, we will apply and expand the findings of technological developments at ETH Zurich.

ftero is another rigid kiteplane project to welcome in AWE. Rigid wings need every chance to succeed against fabric power kites, which have the advantage of cheap TRL9 COTS mass-market availability. There is a clear e-VTOL scaling limit to the ftero architecture, but at its intended scale (~3m WS) itwill fly. Lets hope ftero gets many hours of flight without crashing.

Interesting detail of a self-propelled tether-handling vehicle with its own anchor rode. Also unusual for lumping tether loosely in a bin, uncoiled, which is sometimes done with giant kite tethers (as Dean Jordan showed me). This seems like a short-stroke groundgen (like kPower often tests) rather than EU-style long-reeling. Otherwise, this is a fairly ordinary AWES, with an LEI kite shown in drawings.

Subject: Re: Skeiron
QConcepts, with its Skeiron project, is another quality Dutch player targeting AWE as a big opportunity. As an elite general design group, QConcepts cultivates a garden of various innovative projects. Their raw AWE intuition is that AWES can also provide other airborne services, like remote geo-monitoring and communications. Open-AWE already stands for maximal multi-use of airborne infrastructure, including habitable aerotecture, so its good to see ventures like QConcepts bye-and-bye exploring the same rich possibility-space, but unable to build a IP wall in the sky, due to plentiful prior domain art, from Stone Age kiting to the AWES Forum musings.

The proliferation of new AWE startups continues. Expect indefinite continued growth, a large number of failures, as well as M&A (mergers and acquisitions) around the leaders. There is still room for new start-ups, with no dominant players in place to block rivals. The growing list of developers is mostly seen dividing into natural AWES scale-limit classes to focus on smaller energy apps or larger unit-energy markets. Many small developers seem unaware of extreme scaling law limits on their specific architectures, in suggestive marketing as utility-scale solutions. Skeiron is in that grey area, where QConcepts is not quite up-to-speed in AWES domain expertise, but could be a quick-learner.

This recall's KiteShip's towboat monomaran concept, but this is proa-based, which likely is not very helpful, since an ama is not needed by a kiteboat to balance a masthead rig; instead the kiteline is easily rigged in balanced alignment with the hull.

A sort of intermediate between KPS, Twind, and kPower, of multi-kites driving a single gen. Multi anchors enable wider spacing than KPS, but the masts add a major capital cost.

We are seeing Chinese AWE mirror Western concepts, exploring the same AWES configuration-spaces, headed for the same ultimate solutions.

A rare kitefarm patent, and it may be that the unit-kitefarm is the most critical level of AWES invention. Lets hope disclosed prior art suffices, and there is no overlooked key idea for private IP to create a monopoly with.

The pumping-to-rotary mechanism disclosed (double-acting sprags/ratchets) is well known here by kPower's various versions over the years. Chinese AWE is definitely on the move; the dragon is awake and preparing for flight.

An evident trend in Chinese AWES patents is a preference for low-complexity design, as in this patent abstract-

"A device utilizing upper wind energy to convert mechanical energy mainly resolves problems of complex structure, high cost and low working efficiency of the existing wind power generation device using the upper wind energy. The device is characterized in that an output shaft (4) is fixed with a right one-way clutch and a left one-way clutch (5, 6), the middle section of the short rope (8) is winded on the left one-way clutch (5), and two ends of the short rope (8) are respectively fixed at a right kite big pulling point (9) and a left kite small pulling point (10); the long rope (7) winds on the right one-way clutch (6) and is connected with a fastening controller (11) of rope, and two ends of the long rope (7) are respectively fixed at the right kite small pulling point (13) and the left kite big pulling point (14). The device has advantages of simple structure, low cost and high working efficiency."
