Subject: Re: mechanised pumping automation sketch

Apologies for not explaining it more clearly and thank you for pointing that out.
it's relying on 2 free wheeling hubs when the whole shaft goes up or down the cam can only rotate one way.

There was an obvious problem with it. if there is only enough wind to lift the shaft halfway up and then it went half way down again.. the cam is at minimum kite pull, and at the bottom.

The need to be some feed back to the tension setting from the strength of the wind for this system to work.

Clarification:
1. Already there are centuries of using sawing by glassed lines in kite fighting for ceremony, recreation, and sport. Such practice has some huge downsides: deaths by the sawing of necks, etc. Awful death toll each year in India is announced on the Internet.    Such incidents are very sad for the injured people. And such has moved some municipalities to ban kite flying altogether, even the non-sawing type.

2. Tethers can cut through hands. Sawing of flesh and bone has occurred too often when planning and gloves, etc. failed to be in the scene.

I remember thinking many years ago, that kites might explain the pinnacle of the stone age:  the world's largest rock-piles, in a square footprint.  "Why, we couldn't build them today!"  (?)  (modern people are far too lazy?)  I figured maybe they used kites to lift the rocks.  (Don't get under it!)

Being "inexplicably" aligned with North South East West?  Well obviously, as I'm sure everyone has heard, THAT can only be explained by space aliens...

I guess you could cut down trees using yesterday's clothesline-from-a-propeller-on-a-kite, then use a big kite like that budweiser parafoil that caught the guy's ankle and then dropped him 100 feet (ouch!), to lift the trees from the forest.

In fact you could just replace all construction cranes with kites, but then again, as we've heard, future cities will have kite-supported networks above, where people will live, work, and shop among the polka-dotted mushrooms, so maybe they will stop building regular buildings and the cities will just be all kites!  Hope there isn't a calm day - I'd hate have a giant spotted mushroom land on my head!

Meanwhile, has anyone thought of using kites to tie your shoes? Maybe that giant Budweiser parafoil... :)

Welcome C. Cleventine !

The forum has proven to be a place where some researchers have networked whereupon some funds have funneled to advance prototypes and experiments.   Also, the forum has been a place of exposing projects and needs; some angel funds have followed such exposure.
Differently, sharing ideas, tips, experimental results, etc. may tend to save duplication and unsafe practices.  All have been encouraged to describe safety-critical matters.  Some supply information has been helpful.  Collaboration tends to bring some efficiency in some research programs.
Many in the forum community are investing time and funds in ways that are kept hidden from open view. But the thrust to put on the table the options and opportunities might tend to have investments be more effective.
Needs described will have a chance at being met.   Hidden needs won't have the same chances.

The Vimeo videos regularly stall yet on my computer paths more than YouTube videos.   I do not know the industry status on this matter.    As yet, I did not get through the two videos on the MFV and OKE.   But your energy seems to place you in the right forum, C.Cleventine  Welcome.

We aim to post without keeping long tails of former messages of a thread. There are ways to truncate a message for reply. It can be fun to explore the rich editing and the turning off the rich editing and turning it back on ... to get a clean composition field for fresh comment or reply without the long prior tails.   But keep prior comment that is fertile to a reply effort.

Subject: localised power uses at altitude, kite targets and hydrogen gen
We've discussed using a kitesat (KPower) arrangement for communications.
I believe there will be many more uses for localised power use at altitude.

Starting with toys... my pet topic... Why not tie a string bag under a kite and use it for target practice? It's a great game, I've taught my kids to hunt kites with bow and arrow. The power could be used for scoring detection and score display or signalling.

Arrows, golf, football, rugby, frisbee, javelin?... are all great targetting games which could be adapted with a fun new element... But what about military application.
The army currently shoot drones out of the sky from an Island ~70 miles south of here... pricey! Would kites make good marksman training devices?

Could a kite target bag redirect your ball to return it down a hollow tube run up the tether? That way a hit gets you a returned ball yippee!

My pal Dave Mill (Diesel assist Technologies) makes hydrogen generation cells with a ~20yr service life.... They're small and light and run off your 12v. There's a regulator to inject a small amount into combustion gas mix...
A trickle of hydrogen could be used aloft to maintain balloon characteristics.

A 12v supply aloft could be used to steer said balloon too.  Potentially very handy should you wish to lift an otherwise awkward non lifting AWES.

“MFVs are able to modulate the frequency, shape and rotation of the foil, reel in and out the kite, all while never twisting line; this allows them to exploit energy from the deepest regions of the wind window enabling them to whip kite-loops endlessly; granted they can be controlled.” Personally I'd like to see one of these in a buggy application. http://vimeo.com/m/92683415

C. Cleventine,
Is the MFV the ground-level or sea-level resistive unit or kite-control station of a kite system?  The name teases me to think "foil vane" and to then envision wing?   Or do you apply the name MFV to the combination arrangement of resistive kite control station (perhaps floating or anchored further) along with the tether set and wing set  (thus the integral kite system) ?   Thanks for clarifying the names and focus.

Ok the MFV is the arrangement of parts. It is the chassis of the system like the body of a car, the OKE is much like the engine or propeller (this is the part that rotates the foil. It is very challenging to trace many project beginning that have been rising up in Japan, China, Germany, Russia, Netherlands, Africa, USA, etc. The text that finds its way into patents seem to reflect the run of the forum text. Such spawning is invited and welcome with or without clear reference. The Internet is letting date stamping assist historical tracing of ideas that lead to projects and prototyping. If a group goes stealth, then that is fine also; many will one day find reasons to announce their progress.
There are enough applications for energy kite systems to keep millions of people involved.

Joe,

You mention focus in regard to the MFV, it is essentially a control mechanism, something to replace the kitebar with if you want an actual kite vehicle on the water. This design can be incorporated into a propitiatory kite sail craft. With an enclosed cabin.

While dragging a paravane it can collect electricity, while being used as a keel.

It commands incredible power as it loops ceaselessly.

It breaks down into small package

I built this machine with the entire industry in mind.

Perhaps if blimps were shaped like orca they would be even more manageable, A simple arrangement of plasma actuators would make it possible to manipulate the whole body of a semi rigid ballon

Come to think of it, it would revolutionize boyancy control.

[...at the lead of mention by C. Cleventine, this topic thread could trace plasma actuators in kite systems]

1. C. Cleventine suggested as much that blimps [we extend to LTA kytoons] might use plasma actuators for some control.

Exactly! They would work well for a
ballon rotor project.. If you see the videos, they work better for depower than lift on foils ( maybe they could be reversed? Put on the underside to provide more fluid density?) , you also need high voltage... Tricky stuff when you're dealing with long lines .. Perhaps it would work best as an offshore application, I'm thinking 200m strings, target balloons (maybe whale shaped) (no, then Japan would attack them) with turbines running through, lots of buoyancy control, and if tethered to a paravane, transportable. Possibly up wind

As long as your blimp isn't filled with Hydrogen and you can spare 28Kv and enough power aloft..... There's going to be a long list of reasons why this isn't done yet.

A half a NASA power wing each side ... and a model yacht control servo to balance the pull from near the bridle... That would make a cool controllable blimp... keep it aloft with a kitesat type gen powering the servo and an H2 generator,... to keep pressure over a bottom gas drain valve pressure threshold... (gets rid of heavier gas containments)

Yep, lots of design innovations would be required first.. Batterries, hi voltage...

Very interesting tech, although dated.. Have you seen ionocraft? Or heard about spiders that use electro hydrodynamic lift to climb into the atmosphere?

Subject: Water-Wave Kites

This topic thread invites exploration of water-wave kites. The paravane systems kite their wings in the region of water waves. The wings may be of many different shapes and sizes. Power take-off (PTO) may be situated at various places (resistive realm, tether realm, or wing realm). Perhaps distinguish from current paravane systems by focus on the wing-local flow that occurs because of the wave action (surface and under-surface waves).
